At Mendocino College, part of our Mission is to be an, “intellectual, economic and cultural anchor for the region”, and it is our responsibility and honor to act as a leading public role in the district. Many Americans today are standing up demanding change throughout the US and in our own communities. This is not an easy time, but it is an important one. Change, and open, honest discussions are needed.  

To better serve our community, Mendocino College will begin a public lecture series focused on our social and community challenges. Lectures will feature Mendocino College professors as well as invited speakers from the community sharing their experiences and expertise. These lectures will be a forum for students and community members to explore the challenges facing our country. The focus will be on relevance, community connection, and will offer a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Together, we will examine and grow in positive and meaningful ways and hopefully strive for a more equitable world where we come closer to achieving the promises of the American Dream for equality, justice, and opportunity. 

The lectures will take place via Zoom webinars on the first Tuesday of each month from 6-7 pm beginning October 6. There will be no lecture in December or January.  

The first lecture will be hosted by Mendocino College Political Science Instructor Phillip Warf. Titled, “Thumb on the Scale: Using Gerrymandering and Voter Suppression to Rig Elections”, this lecture will discuss how politicians draw congressional districts and enact voting laws that benefit their party but undermine democracy.
