Mendocino College held its 29th Annual Latino Student Retreat on Friday, April 21st.
This successful event hosted over 320 high school students from Mendocino and Lake Counties for a day of motivational speakers and college related workshops.
Jaime Carias from the University of Southern California, provided an inspirational keynote as well as two workshops geared towards helping students develop future goals. Dr. Amanda Xu, MESA Director at Mendocino College, offered a dynamic, hands-on workshop on STEM majors and careers. Professor Maria Cetto, Mendocino College Spanish Department, provided a workshop on developing a positive mindset to lead towards success. Staff from the Financial Aid Office and College Assistance Migrant Program also provided workshops. Additionally, Mendocino College student panels were held to help future students plan for college and take full advantage of the resources available to them.
Participants who completed an evaluation at the end of the retreat made statements that included; “I enjoyed the presentations and am now thinking more about my future”; “First time attending the retreat and will for sure come next year!”; “The retreat helped me think about what I’m going to do with my life and the programs that can help me”; “You guys are doing great! Always motivating and helping students with your wise words. Thank you for doing this for us students!”
Mendocino College is proud to host this event each year under the leadership of Monica Flores, CAMP Program Manager.
