The Mendocino College Art Gallery is excited to announce its new exhibit, “Fresh Ink: Contemporary Printmaking” opening on Thursday, September 15 with a reception from 4 – 6 pm. This exhibit features the work of Jonathan Palmer and Harry Frank, two printmakers who use this versatile medium in very different ways.

Jonathan Palmer is a mixed media artist who utilizes traditional printmaking materials, such as carved linoleum, in unexpected ways. His work offers us entry into complex worlds full of disparate images that form unexpected narratives. Earning an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013, Palmer has exhibited his work throughout the United States including New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baton Rouge, Providence, as well as internationally in Japan. He teaches painting, drawing and printmaking classes at Mendocino College and the San Francisco Art Institute and lives in Fort Bragg with his wife and daughter.

Harry Frank creates richly toned and nuanced monotypes which he describes as the simplest form of printmaking, requiring only pigments (ink), a surface on which to apply them, paper and some form of press. The images are then made on a plate, either metal or Plexiglass, and transferred to a piece of prepared paper by the pressure of a press. The resulting images are far from simple, however, as they are evocatively atmospheric with a captivating mystery and stillness. Frank earned a BFA from the Boston Museum School and then did graduate work in ceramics at The Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan before switching to monotypes as a primary medium. Originally from Coney Island in Brooklyn, Frank has spent the last 26 years as a high school art teacher in Santa Rosa, CA.
