File: NR-MC to host reading and book signing by Josh Bazell
Friends of the Mendocino College Library will host a reading and book signing by Josh Bazell whose Beat the Reaper has been a national best seller and has been optioned for a movie. The reading will take place on Thursday, October 15th at 7:00 PM in Room 5310 on the Mendocino College Ukiah campus, located at 1000 Hensley Creek Road.
The novel is set in the world of the medical profession. It takes a former hit man and puts him in a hospital as a medical intern where a former mafia Don shows up. Fast-paced, funny, and at times gory, the novel races through the corridors of the hospital at breakneck speed.
Bazell holds a BA in English literature and writing from Brown University and an MD from Columbia. Currently a resident at the University of California, San Francisco, he wrote Beat the Reaper while completing his internship at a hospital not at all like the one described in the book.
Publishers Weekly had this to say about Bazell’s debut novel, "Making a hit man turned medical intern a sympathetic figure would be a tall order for most authors, but first-time novelist Bazell makes it look easy in this breezy and darkly comic suspense novel....The hero's wry narrative voice, coupled with Bazell's artful use of flashbacks to sustain tension and fill in Pietro's past, are a winning combination." Another review source, The Washington Post Book World, said, “Bazell has sutured together Alan Alda's Capt. Hawkeye and James Gandolfini's Tony Soprano, and so long as he keeps everything operating fast enough, it's too much fun and too much gore to take your eyes off the page.”
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear and meet the author. In addition, Mendocino Book Company will be on hand with books for sale at the event. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Mendocino College Library, an affiliate group of the Mendocino College Foundation.
