Syllabus Disability Statement
Jeanne Kincaid, Attorney at Law, a specialist in disability law in higher education, strongly encourages faculty to include the following or similar statement on their syllabus:
“Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disability Resource Center (707-468-3031), Room 1000 MacMillan Hall, as soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion.”
The role of the Disability Resource Center staff is to determine whether students with disabilities are eligible for services and to determine appropriate accommodations. It is important for students to receive this information from as many sources as possible. One purpose of the referral is to better ensure the campus is only providing services to students with documented disabilities.
