Career and Transfer Center assist Students with Future
Ukiah, CA – An often overlooked service in colleges is the career and transfer center. Mendocino College’s Career and Transfer Center doesn’t just schedule courses for students, but also provides students with the information they need to choose a major/career, to transfer to a four-year college and to get a job.
According to Mendocino’s Career and Transfer Center Director Candie Dickinson, choosing a major or career is not just picking one out of a hat.
“We know through research that students who have a clear educational goal will persist and not drop out of school. They will also enjoy learning more and achieve a higher GPA,” Dickinson said.
The Mendocino College Career and Transfer Center helps students with careers, majors and transferring. Approximately 270 Mendocino College students transferred to four-year institutions during the 2007-2008 school year.
The Career and Transfer Center works with high school students and offers various open houses to explain the importance of college, steps to transferring and the process of choosing a major.
Thirty-five junior and senior students from the Accelerated Achievement Academy in Ukiah visited Mendocino College on Wednesday, September 17. The students learned what the Mendocino College Career and Transfer Center involves and they received a campus tour by Mendocino College Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) students.
Mendocino College will host a College and University Day on October 6 from 10-1. Around twenty University of California, California-State Universities and private schools will be present. The public is also invited to attend.
Career and major exploration, personality assessments, educational planning, creating a resume, job shadowing, mock interviews and informational interviewing are some of the services that students who visit the Career and Transfer Center will have access to in obtaining further information on careers and majors.
With the personality assessments, student will first identify their interests, values, skills and personality. Next, students will learn about different careers. Finally, they will find out more about specific careers that interest them and for which they would be compatible.
The Career and Transfer Center aids students who may be transferring to a four-year institution. The Center assists in developing a transfer plan, meeting with four-year college representatives for instant admission, applying to four-year colleges and obtaining additional information about public, private and technical colleges.
Career Cruising is a comprehensive approach for planning a student’s career or major. It assesses interests, skills and work values and then matches those with careers. The system helps students with resumes, has updated information about careers, and explores education and training. Career Cruising is a complete guidance system for students.
The Career and Transfer Center is offering Transfer Admissions Guarantees (TAG) with University of California institutions, California State Universities and private college. Also, students who qualify have instant admissions to Humboldt State University and Sonoma State University.
